What would it be like to live in a world where every human life was respected from conception to natural death? How would family life be different if women were treated with dignity and respect through all 9 months of pregnancy? What would a world without abortion look life – where no more women cry and no more babies die. Can you imagine such a world?
Abortion happens in the context of marriage and family life. It is the deliberate ending of a pregnancy, of a life already conceived. Most abortions stop a beating heart. It is in the absence of God’s plan for life and love that a culture of abortion has proliferated. When a healthy culture of marriage and family life develops, abortion will become unthinkable.
Nobody I know deliberately gets pregnant in order to have an abortion. Many people unintentionally find themselves in a situation where there have a crisis or unwanted pregnancy. The separation of sex from procreation has created a culture where people expect to be able to be engaged in sexual intimacy without the risk of becoming pregnant. A surprise happens when some people realise that they are pregnant when they were having sex but did not expect that result.
A culture of fertility awareness would help both men and women to realise the amazing gift of fertility and to understand how the body work, to help both achieve and avoid pregnancy ethically. It is good for the body use environmentally friendly, natural and ethical means of understanding and appreciating our fertility. Fertility is not a disease that needs to be regulated, but a beautiful and tremendous gift, allowing us to give ourselves. Some excellent courses, apps and tools today help people appreciate the wonderful miracle of fertility.
Contraception creates a framework in which abortion becomes a possible backup plan. Birth control pills have medical side effects, acting through tricking the body into thinking it is pregnant. Normally medicine is used to help the right and proper functioning of the body, but the pill does precisely the opposite. The pill tricks the body into thinking it is pregnant. When contraception fails, people find themselves in a situation where they are pregnant when they did not expect to be. No form of contraception is 100% effective. Abortion businesses know that contraception is vital to their business plan are happy to endorse contraception, knowing that when it fails, they will be there will a willing hand ready to end the life of the unborn child. Abortion does not make a woman unpregnant, it makes her the mother of a dead baby.
What could you do to help create a culture that respects the integrity of every person, through healthy, ethical, environmentally friendly decisions that respect the right to life for every person? How could you share this vision with as many other people as possible? How could your witness in life help to create a culture which respects marriage and family life as priorities in life, and as seeing new life as a gift? What difference could your witness make? You might be surprised with how many people you could influence by your personal example.
Chastity, contraception and abortion are all interrelated. The abortion culture not only has a profound influence on our demography, but also our economic future. God’s mercy can encompass all those who have previously had abortions. An encounter with God’s healing, forgiveness, love and compassion for anyone who has had an abortion is an awe inspiring experience of someone who loves us no matter what we do.
